3. Some Important Tips
Preparing for your semester exams can feel overwhelming, but with the right strategy, you can approach them with confidence. Here are our key tips for effective preparation and performance.
A. Focus on Key Concepts, Not Stress
External exams are often more manageable than they appear. You'll find that most essay and short-answer questions are based on predictable, core topics from the syllabus. Focus your energy on understanding these key areas thoroughly rather than trying to memorize everything.
B. Adapt Your Answers to the Marks
Be flexible in your preparation. A topic that appeared as a 10-mark essay last year might be a 5-mark short note this year. The skill is not just knowing the topic, but scaling your answer. Practice writing long, structured responses for essays and summarizing the same concepts concisely for short answers. Always let the allotted marks guide the depth and length of your response.
C. Prioritise High-Mark Questions
While it's tempting to chase every 1-mark MCQ, it's often more effective to focus your study time on high-mark essays and short answers. By mastering these larger topics, you build a deep conceptual understanding. This foundation will naturally help you answer most MCQs or, at the very least, make highly educated guesses from the options provided.
D. Master Your Time in the Exam Hall
Each paper is 3 hours long and typically covers two subjects. This requires strict time management.
- Divide your time: Allocate roughly 1.5 hours per subject.
- Practice: Try completing mock papers within this time limit. This will help you build the stamina and pacing needed to attempt all questions without rushing.
